SIT Appoints Heng Swee Keat as Inaugural Chancellor

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) has named Heng Swee Keat, former Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, as its inaugural chancellor. This appointment, which takes effect on June 1, 2026, marks a significant milestone for the institution. Heng will serve a five-year term, ending on May 31, 2031, during which he will occupy the highest ceremonial position at SIT, acting as the university’s primary ambassador.

In his role as chancellor, Heng will oversee key university events such as graduation ceremonies and will represent SIT in various institutional and external engagements. SIT highlighted that Heng’s extensive leadership background and professional connections are expected to enhance the university’s partnerships and strategic objectives, especially in areas like industry collaboration and philanthropic efforts.

The establishment of the chancellor position underscores SIT’s ongoing growth as a higher education institution committed to producing graduates ready for industry challenges through applied learning, research, and active business engagement. Heng expressed enthusiasm for his new role, emphasizing the critical role of applied research and robust industry partnerships in contemporary education. Singapore’s Education Minister, Desmond Lee, congratulated Heng on his new appointment, expressing confidence in Heng’s ability to steer SIT towards future growth and its contributions to Singapore’s higher education landscape. Heng’s current roles include chairman of the National Research Foundation, a director at GIC, and a member of its Investment Strategies Committee. His previous roles include serving as Deputy Prime Minister from 2019 to 2025, Education Minister from 2011 to 2015, and Finance Minister from 2015 to 2021.
