Singapore and Indonesia have formalized an agreement to enhance their collaboration in the areas of nuclear security, radiation protection, and emergency preparedness. This pact, signed on June 30 in Jakarta between Singapore’s National Environment Agency (NEA) and Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency, underscores the growing partnership between the two nations as they expand their cooperation in nuclear and environmental sectors.
The focus of this agreement lies in radiation monitoring, regulatory policy development, nuclear safety training, staff exchanges, research collaboration, and technical discussions. NEA Chief Executive Benjamin Koh emphasized that this partnership builds on the longstanding cooperation between the two countries and aligns with Singapore’s plans to evaluate the potential integration of nuclear energy into its future energy strategy.
Beyond electricity generation, the agreement also covers nuclear applications in fields such as healthcare and agriculture, alongside implementing nuclear security measures to safeguard facilities from potential threats. Singapore is gearing up for an assessment by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2027, which will evaluate its capability to make informed decisions regarding the deployment of nuclear energy. Meanwhile, Indonesia, with its well-established nuclear expertise, aims to achieve around 500 megawatts of nuclear capacity by the early 2030s.
The collaboration is also intended to fortify regional cooperation through initiatives like the ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy. This platform will enable member countries to share information and enhance preparedness for possible radiological emergencies. This nuclear agreement follows another environmental cooperation pact signed on June 29, addressing cross-border pollution, waste management, climate change, and air and water quality issues.
Both Singaporean and Indonesian officials have also expressed concerns regarding the potential return of the El Niño climate pattern, which could exacerbate environmental challenges such as haze and drought conditions across Southeast Asia. This adds another layer of importance to the collaborative efforts between the two countries in mitigating these risks.
