A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday, resulting in at least 35 fatalities and injuring over 200 individuals. The seismic event also triggered a tsunami, impacting several coastal regions. The earthquake’s epicenter was located near Mindanao at a depth of approximately 33 kilometers, causing significant destruction, especially in General Santos City, where numerous buildings crumbled or suffered substantial damage. Search and rescue operations are actively underway to locate those who may be trapped under the wreckage.

Sarangani province experienced one of the most tragic incidents, where a landslide initiated by the quake claimed 13 lives. Other provinces also reported deaths due to collapsing structures and falling debris. Tsunami waves reached up to 1.4 meters along parts of the southern coastline, damaging homes and other coastal infrastructures. Smaller tsunami waves were observed in neighboring countries, including Indonesia, Palau, and Japan, but tsunami warnings were eventually lifted as the immediate threat subsided.

The earthquake led to the temporary closure of General Santos International Airport, resulting in the cancellation of several domestic flights. Schools in the affected areas were shut down while emergency teams evaluated the extent of the damage and coordinated relief efforts. In response to the disaster, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has called for an expedited government response, instructing disaster management agencies to provide aid to the affected communities.

Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant due to the possibility of aftershocks and are advising against returning to damaged buildings until safety inspections are completed. The Philippines is particularly prone to earthquakes, as it is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high seismic and volcanic activity.
