Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore has called on more youth from varied backgrounds to become part of the People’s Action Party (PAP), emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives and ideas for the party’s growth. Speaking at the 40th anniversary event of the Young PAP, Wong highlighted that a variety of thoughts is crucial for the party to rejuvenate itself and effectively tackle the challenges Singapore will face in the future. He encouraged those who are passionate about the country’s progress, even if they hold differing views from the PAP, to share their ideas and engage actively.
Wong addressed concerns among some young Singaporeans who perceive the PAP as an entrenched entity that may not need new members. He countered this by asserting that on the global stage, Singapore remains an “underdog” and that each new generation must infuse fresh leadership and innovation to help the country thrive. The Prime Minister underscored the necessity of continuous renewal within the party to maintain its relevance and effectiveness.
Furthermore, Wong cautioned against adopting divisive or confrontational political tactics, reinforcing the PAP’s commitment to resolving issues through collaboration, practical measures, and consensus-building rather than inciting public discontent or fostering political division. His remarks reflect the party’s dedication to maintaining a stable and united political environment in Singapore.
The event also saw the launch of the Young PAP Academy, an initiative designed to provide leadership training and mentorship for young party activists. Additionally, the YP 40 Under 40 Fellowship was introduced, offering grants of S$5,000 to support community projects spearheaded by younger members of the party. These initiatives aim to empower the next generation of leaders within the PAP and enhance their ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
