Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will make a historic visit to Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking the first time a head of the Singaporean government has traveled to this Southeast Asian nation. During his stay, he will engage in significant discussions with Timor-Leste’s President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. In a notable gesture, PM Wong is set to be honored with the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the country’s highest accolade, acknowledging Singapore’s contributions to Timor-Leste’s growth and its integration into the ASEAN community.
The agenda for this visit includes talks focused on enhancing bilateral relations, with an emphasis on establishing a new framework for regular consultations. The two nations are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at fostering deeper collaboration in critical areas such as governance, capacity building, and regional engagement. This partnership builds on Singapore’s longstanding support for Timor-Leste, which has included training programs, technical assistance, and peacekeeping efforts since the early days following Timor-Leste’s independence.
As Timor-Leste’s journey within ASEAN continues to evolve, Singapore’s role has been pivotal, underscoring the importance of this diplomatic visit. Prime Minister Wong’s itinerary also includes attending a state banquet and meeting with Singaporean expatriates residing in Timor-Leste. His delegation will comprise senior ministers and officials, ensuring a comprehensive representation of Singapore’s government interests.
While Prime Minister Wong is engaged in this diplomatic mission, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister back in Singapore. This visit is anticipated to reinforce the diplomatic bonds between Singapore and Timor-Leste and bolster the latter’s ongoing integration into regional frameworks.
