Amid heightened tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw over a historical controversy, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not participate in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Poland. The conference, designed to attract international support and investment for Ukraine’s post-war rebuilding efforts, will proceed with Ukraine’s delegation headed by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. This significant event is being conducted in Gdańsk, Poland.
The discord stems from Zelenskyy’s approval of a Ukrainian military unit being named after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While many in Ukraine regard the UPA as a symbol of their fight for independence, Poland associates the group with the tragic deaths of thousands of Poles during World War II. This decision has sparked criticism from Polish political figures, including President Karol Nawrocki, who has accused Ukraine of disregarding the historical pain experienced by Poland.
Despite the close ties that have been fostered since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the historical dispute has strained relations between the two nations. Zelenskyy has defended his decision by asserting that military units should have the autonomy to select names that reflect Ukrainian history. He cautioned that political disagreements could potentially undermine the crucial cooperation between Ukraine and Poland amid ongoing security threats.
In a call for calm, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk encouraged both nations to de-escalate the situation, emphasizing that their strategic partnership should not be jeopardized by such disagreements. European officials have echoed similar sentiments, warning that a deterioration in Poland-Ukraine relations could play into Russia’s hands. They have stressed the importance of sustained cooperation between the neighboring countries as they face shared challenges.
