The Philippine government expressed its hope for a fair impeachment trial for Vice President Sara Duterte, amidst public unease over recent shifts in the Senate’s leadership. On Tuesday, Malacañang emphasized the significance of impartiality in the process as it moves forward.
Claire Castro, the Palace Press Officer, noted that the impeachment case has now reached the Senate. She reiterated that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. intends to remain uninvolved in the proceedings, respecting the separation of powers and the legislative branch’s role in this matter.
During a press conference, Castro stated, “Hopefully, if this goes to the Senate, our senators will be fair judges, because this is for the people.” Her comments highlighted the importance of fairness in the trial for maintaining public trust in the government.
Castro further elaborated that the responsibility now lies with the Senate, following the actions taken by the House of Representatives. She clarified that the impeachment process is not within the President’s mandate, reinforcing the independence of the legislative process.
