The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has made significant strides in its naval modernization efforts with the recent launch of its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), Valour. This event occurred just nine months after the debut of its sister ship, Victory, at Benoi Shipyard. This swift progress highlights the advancements in the country’s naval capabilities as it seeks to replace its aging Victory-class missile corvettes with more modern and versatile warships.
ST Engineering CEO Vincent Chong attributed the expedited three-month launch of the Valour to the lessons learned from constructing Victory. The production process is expected to become even more efficient for the subsequent vessels in the series. These new MRCVs, which include Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, are designed to accommodate a variety of unmanned systems, enabling them to perform multiple mission types. The complete fleet is set for progressive delivery beginning in 2028.
During the launch ceremony, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam underscored the increasing importance of maritime security amid growing global tensions and disruptions in critical sea lanes, such as the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that with an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and the capability to remain at sea for over 21 days, these vessels would play a crucial role in safeguarding Singapore’s maritime interests.
Construction is already underway for the third and fourth ships in the MRCV class. Shanmugam highlighted Singapore’s capacity to independently design, build, and maintain advanced naval warships, attributing this capability to decades of investment in the country’s defense industry. The project demands extensive systems integration, encompassing power management, cooling, and mission module requirements, as noted by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned 19-year veteran of the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance, has been appointed as the commanding officer of Valour. His vision is to cultivate a crew with a pioneering spirit that will continue to shape the future of the Republic of Singapore Navy.
