Singapore and Sweden Strengthen Ties in Technology and Economic Cooperation

Singapore and Sweden have committed to enhancing their collaboration in advanced technologies and sharing strategies on social cohesion and economic competitiveness. This agreement was announced by Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam during his state visit to Sweden, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The nations are set to explore joint ventures in areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, the Internet of Things, and 5G and 6G applications. A significant outcome of the visit was a joint declaration on strategic cooperation in trusted and innovative technologies, aimed at bolstering both countries’ technological and business landscapes.

President Tharman highlighted the opportunity for mutual learning, particularly from Sweden’s model of balancing social equality with a robust start-up ecosystem. He noted Sweden’s strong network of investors, mentors, and business founders as a potential blueprint for Singapore as it seeks to enhance start-up funding and innovation. Sweden’s culture of supporting emerging enterprises through a community of angel investors was also identified as a valuable lesson for Singapore.

In addition to technology and business, the discussions emphasized the importance of cooperation between employers and trade unions in areas such as worker training and job transitions. Both countries aim to ensure that economic transformation not only fosters growth but also supports workers in adapting to industry changes.

During his five-day visit, President Tharman engaged with prominent Swedish companies like Spotify, Ericsson, and Volvo, exploring further opportunities for business and technological partnerships. This visit builds on a long history of bilateral cooperation that has spanned sectors such as defense technology, research, education, and energy.

The discussions between Singapore and Sweden underscore a shared commitment to fostering innovation, promoting inclusive economic growth, and enhancing global competitiveness amid a challenging international landscape.
