Inspect Fuselages for Cracks, Airlines Directed for Boeing 737 Max

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a directive for operators of Boeing 737 Max airplanes to conduct inspections on a crucial structural part of the fuselage for potential cracks. This mandate, impacting around 471 aircraft, is slated to commence in September. The inspections aim to scrutinize a component referred to as the bear strap, which comprises structural layers that fortify the fuselage near the exit doors. These inspections follow the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which had already undergone evaluations for this issue.

To date, there have been no reported cracks in the 737 Max fleet. However, the FAA highlighted that the aircraft’s design and manufacturing process bears resemblance to the older models, suggesting the possibility of similar problems arising. The regulatory body warned that any undetected cracks could compromise a significant structural element, potentially jeopardizing the aircraft’s overall structural integrity.

Boeing has acknowledged the situation, stating it has been collaborating with airlines since the issue first emerged in 2019. The company is in full support of the mandatory inspections, noting that these checks are crucial for identifying and addressing any issues before they develop into critical problems.

This new wave of inspections adds another layer of scrutiny to the 737 Max, which has been under intense examination following safety incidents and concerns over its manufacturing and engineering quality. Notably, this aircraft model was grounded globally after two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019, underscoring the ongoing vigilance surrounding its operational safety.
