Experts Alert: Prolonged Sitting Damages Spine During Extended Desk Work

Office workers spending extended periods sitting without movement risk back pain, neck stiffness, and posture issues, warn health experts. Prolonged sitting is increasingly problematic, potentially leading to long-term musculoskeletal problems if not addressed.

Experts highlight that continuous sitting exerts pressure on the lower back, tightens spinal muscles, and hampers blood circulation. Over time, this pressure can alter the spine’s natural curves, causing discomfort that may worsen gradually. Common symptoms include lower back pain after sitting, neck stiffness, shoulder tension, muscle tightness in the back or legs, and discomfort that eases after standing or walking. Ignoring these signs could mean growing stress on the spine.

Poor ergonomics at workstations contribute to forward head posture, where the head protrudes in front of the shoulders due to prolonged computer or smartphone use. If left unaddressed, this posture may elevate the risk of nerve compression, spinal disc issues, and chronic posture-related disorders.

To alleviate strain, experts advise taking short breaks every 25 to 30 minutes, engaging in regular stretching, adjusting chair height, and placing computer screens at eye level. An ergonomic workspace can significantly reduce neck and back stress. Tools such as ergonomic chairs, standing desks, posture support braces, foam rollers, exercise balls, resistance bands, posture-support pillows, and stretching accessories can aid in improving posture and spinal health. Despite these aids, experts stress that consistent movement, strengthening exercises, and healthy sitting habits are the most effective defenses for spine protection.

Individuals experiencing persistent pain, numbness, weakness, or worsening symptoms should seek professional healthcare evaluation and treatment. Addressing these issues early is crucial to preventing long-term complications.
