Singapore, Timor-Leste Enhance Economic Ties and Strengthen Bilateral Collaboration

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Singapore and Timor-Leste have formalized a cooperation framework aimed at enhancing collaboration across various sectors such as economic development, healthcare, education, and regional affairs. This landmark agreement was signed during Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s official visit to Dili, marking the first visit by a Singaporean prime minister to Timor-Leste. The framework sets the stage for regular dialogues between the foreign ministries of both nations to deliberate on bilateral, regional, and international matters.

Economically, Singapore has reaffirmed its role as one of the largest investors in Timor-Leste, with Singaporean companies actively exploring opportunities in renewable energy and wholesale trade sectors. An important aspect of the agreement is the opening up of Singapore’s job market to Timorese workers starting in 2027. These workers will be able to find employment in key sectors such as construction and marine shipyards, thereby enhancing workforce opportunities and strengthening cultural and social ties between the two countries.

The framework also focuses on boosting cooperation in healthcare and education. Singapore’s National University Hospital is set to collaborate with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Health to advance workforce development and healthcare training initiatives. In the educational sphere, Singapore will aid in creating leadership training programs for educators, contributing to the growth of Timor-Leste’s educational infrastructure.

Additionally, Singapore has committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This support includes expanded training programs and assistance in preparing for Timor-Leste’s anticipated ASEAN chairmanship in 2029. Such efforts underscore Singapore’s dedication to facilitating Timor-Leste’s regional integration and development.

The visit also saw Prime Minister Wong being honored with the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar) by President José Ramos-Horta. This award recognizes Singapore’s enduring support for Timor-Leste’s development journey and its aspirations for ASEAN membership. This gesture further cements the strong bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
